Obama Now Ahead in Michigan

Time to switch Michigan on the map, Jerome. Based on the article accompanying the Rasmussen poll that has Obama up 45-42, it looks like Obama is making serious inroads on McCain's white male base.

The latest Rasmussen Reports poll in Michigan shows Barack Obama attracting 45% of the vote while John McCain earns 42%. This is the fourth poll in Michigan since McCain wrapped up the Republican nomination and all four have found the candidates within three points of each other. In both May and late-March McCain held a statistically insignificant one-point lead.

Obama has reduced the gap among male voters and now trails McCain by eleven percentage points among men. That's down from a nineteen point deficit last month. Obama leads by thirteen among women, a figure that has changed little. McCain is supported by 83% of Republicans while Obama currently gets the vote from 74% of Democrats. In our previous survey, those numbers were 84% and 70% respectively. McCain now leads by five points among Michigan's unaffiliated voters, down from a thirteen point lead in May.

That's a 45point gain.

Careful (2.00 / 2)

I completely agree with the sentiment but it can be interpreted as a jab at Clinton supporters.

We really do need unity. I'm not necessarily saying we need it to win (although it doesn't hurt!), but at least for the sake of harmony.

Kudos to Obama for pulling ahead in MI! Soon the nay sayers will come to realize what a formidable candidate Obama really is.

Re: Careful (none / 0)

We pretty much knew Obama would be competative there.  For awhile, when I came to this page, I would instinctively flip Wisconsin and Michigan.

Re: Not bad for Zero (none / 0)

Not bad for zero campaigning by either candidate. Democrats have been looking stronger in states where BOTH candidates worked the state trying to appeal to the voters. Poor Michigan and Florida were cheated out of a competitive primary by the queue-jumping date-changers. But now their voters are catching up with those in other states.

Re: Obama Now Ahead in Michigan (none / 0)

Given the fact that Michigan has apparently been in a one-state recession long before the rest of the country followed suit, it is no surprise that they are recognizing that Republicans are never going to do shiza to help them out.

Many of Obama's proposals should positively benefit many Michiganer's.  Even the idea of assisting auto manufacturers in the retooling to more energy efficient cars and trucks would likely be a boon to the state.

Re: Obama Now Ahead in Michigan (none / 0)

Also an Indiana poll for the Governor match up showed McCain ahead, so maybe flip Indiana back?

The Indiana Legislative Insight poll? That's an odd poll. No undecideds show up. I can't find anything about the methodology, but I'd be surprised if there are no more undecideds in Indiana.

Probably true (none / 0)

He will do remarkably better than Kerry in Indiana, but Indiana only goes blue in a landslide or an Obama/Bayh ticket.

Margin of error, but better (none / 0)

as 3 points is MoE. He still needs to work on that state. We have not lost that state since Michael Dukakis.

Michigan is strange when blue (none / 0)

Remember the even while this state was voting for Clinton, it elected John Engler three times, Spencer Abraham to the Senate, had a Republican legislature and Republicans control the state's delegation.

Michigan will be decided in Oakland County, which has narrowly gone Dem in the last few elections, but is overwhelmingly Republican locally.

McCain could win Oakland, Romney probably could too, any other Republican would never have a chance there.

With that said, I think Obama narrowly wins Oakland and the state.

Re: Obama Now Ahead in Michigan (none / 0)

Obama's now ahead in the electoral counter 328-210, the highest its ever been.  He has all the Kerry states plus Iowa and New Mexico (which Gore won), and picks up Ohio, Missouri, Virginia, Colorado, and Indiana (which I personally feel ain't gonna happen unless Obama is crushing McCain by 10 points nationwide in which case he also probably takes Florida, Nevada, Arkansas, North Carolina, Texas, and Montana).  400+ electoral votes is likely if Obama manages to snag Indiana.
